S-trap or P-trap: which toilet outlet do you have?
It is the first thing to check before buying a toilet bowl. The bowl’s outlet has to meet the waste pipe where it already is.
How to tell
- S-trap (floor outlet): the pipe goes into the floor behind or under the bowl. You also need the distance from the wall: how to measure.
- P-trap (wall outlet): the pipe goes back into the wall behind the bowl.
Which bowls fit each
- 14 floor-standing bowls listed here are for a floor outlet only, 0 for a wall outlet only, and 15 are listed for both.
- 13 wall-hung bowls connect at the wall but need a concealed cistern and frame: what that involves.
Can you change from one to the other?
Only by re-routing the waste pipe. That is sanitary work for a PUB licensed plumber (PUB: plumbing works), and in an HDB flat your contractor should confirm HDB’s rules (HDB: water and sanitary plumbing works). It is usually simpler to choose a bowl made for the outlet you have.
